Our pick of seven of the best events and things to do in Cape Town from Friday, 29 April to Sunday, 1 May 2016.
Pick any weekend of the year in Cape Town and you’re bound to find a host of events planned throughout our hip and happening city. Whether it’s dancing like nobody is listening at Beerhouse, or sampling the best of SA’s cheese at the Cheese Festival, this weekend is sure to be one to remember.
#PickoftheWeek: Afrika Ablaze Unchained Dance Showcase
The choreographic genius that is Glenda Jones brings you a rediscovery of movement and expression at the Baxter Theatre from Tuesday, 26, until Saturday, 30 April 2016. This exploration of creative autonomy is an opportunity that does not come around everyday. In the form of a dance showcase, Jones explores the themes of freedom and expectation with help from Chelsea Samuels, Quisha Dawood and Danielle-Marie Jones. The first half of the show features six-year-old Someleze Betela as the main act, and the second half features gifted seventeen year-old Annelize Douglas. For more info, read our feature.
2. The Darling Collection Showcase
From Friday, 29 April to Sunday, 1 May, the Darling Collection brings you a performance art showcase like no other. The residents of Darling (where the event is hosted) were asked to put forward personal items of sentimental value, and 41 brave souls volunteered. These items became the themes and inspiration for the entire showcase. With general theatre shows and songs, this celebration of visual arts has it all. Head out to Darling this weekend to see the latest brain child from Wim Visser performed by students from the Netherlands’ Fontys University. For more info, check out our event page.
3. The OneSight Acoustics Finale
While listening to the sound of a live performance is mesmerising, watching a concert is half of the fun – and this is a gift that one in seven people cannot experience. These people lack the funds or access to medical facilities that allow them to receive the necessary treatment for sight impairments. But there’s a way that you can help! The OneSight Acoustic Finale is the final concert in a series of four shows benefitting OneSight; a global non-profit dedicated to bringing eye care to individuals in need around the world. The show will feature Goodluck’s Juliet, Matthew and Ben, along with Cape Town faves The Kiffness and more. Celebrate SA music with a conscience and benefit those less fortunate on Saturday, 30 April at the V&A Waterfront Croquet Lawn. The OneSight Acoustics Finale is your last chance to donate to a worthy cause. Remember, if you use the code ‘ONESIGHTCAPEMAG’, you can get R50 off when you purchase two tickets!
4. Silent Disco at Beerhouse
Dancing to the beat of your own drum is one thing, but why not dance to music that others may not be listening to? Disguise your terrible dancing this Friday, 29 April 2016 at Cape Town’s beloved Beerhouse. With three dance floors, and three DJ channels, the night promises to be a dancing wonderland. Remember, dancing is always better with beer, and Beerhouse has lots. In fact, they have over 120 beers to choose from, so even the snobbiest of beer snobs couldn’t refuse. Dance with headphones on, and have a genuine excuse for your lack of rhythm, at this Silent Disco.
5. Woodstock Autumn Beer Festival
The Palms Market is one of Cape Town’s most loved markets, and they’re endearing themselves even more this Sunday, 1 May by hosting a celebration of one of our favourite drinks: beer. There will be 13 breweries in attendance, including Riot Beer, Darling Brew, Birkenhead and Woodstock Brewery. Enjoy their classic beers, while also getting the opportunity to try the ales brewed especially for the event. Feel special people, it’s basically personalised beer! Sip on golden perfection, and nibble on the mouthwatering treats that The Palms Market is so well known for. For a full list of breweries and additional info, hop across to this article.
6. SA Cheese Festival
Do you love cheese? Silly question, of course you do. Well, head out to Sandringham Farm in Stellenbosch this weekend to enjoy all things cheesy. Cheese is as versatile as wine: pair it with drinks, eat it on its own, cook with it, do whatever you want with it, but this is the only festival that brings together the best of SA cheese. It’s Stellenbosch, so there will obviously be wine tasting, and to top it all off, some of SA’s favourite chefs will be there, to teach you how to utilise the amazing produce (cheese) on offer in your cooking! Check out the SA Cheese Festival, and get tickets to avoid brie-ing disappointed.
7. Red Bull BC One Dance Battle
Marvel at dancers that are better than you. No seriously, the world’s largest breakdancing competition is coming to Cape Town on Saturday, 30 April 2016. The Cape Town Stadium is where it’s happening this weekend, and this event is not likely to come around again anytime soon. These dancers have talent in abundance, and the top 16 break dancers in the entire world are coming to the Mother City to fight it out for world domination. It will feature one-on-one rounds, with the winner advancing to the next stage, until a champion is crowned. For more info, check out the Red Bull BC One Dance Battle event page.
